In the small town of Taft, Oklahoma, the annual Memorial Day festival, a long-standing tradition, turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy on May 29, 2022. Sherika Bowler, a 39-year-old Black female, was killed in a mass shooting that erupted just after midnight, abruptly ending the festive atmosphere that had drawn approximately 1,500 people. Seven other individuals, with ages ranging from nine to 56, were also wounded in the gunfire.
The violence reportedly began with an argument,
escalating quickly into a deadly exchange of bullets. Witnesses described the terrifying moments as what they initially thought were fireworks turned out to be gunshots, sending attendees running for cover and diving to the ground. The Muskogee County Sheriff's Office, already present to provide security for the event, responded immediately to the scene to render aid to the victims. Investigators later recovered 40 shell casings from four different caliber weapons, indicating that multiple shooters were involved in the incident.
In the days and weeks that followed, law enforcement made a series of arrests in connection with the shooting. The first suspect, 26-year-old Skyler Buckner, turned himself in to the Muskogee County Sheriff's Office on the afternoon of May 29th. Subsequently, a second suspect, 25-year-old Kendall Alexander, was apprehended. The investigation continued to unfold, leading to the surrender of two more individuals, Gervorise Warrior and Keshawn Jackson, in late June. The community of Taft, a town with a population of only a few hundred, was left to grapple with the aftermath of a senseless act of violence that claimed the life of Sherika Bowler and shattered the peace of their annual gathering.
