In the quiet town of Ozark, Missouri, a tragic event unfolded on May 28, 2022, that ended the life of 57-year-old Joe Newburn. The male victim was found lying in the roadway in the 100 block of West Church Street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a Springfield hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The incident stemmed from a confrontation that occurred just before 1 p.m.
outside the Iguana Roja Restaurante in the historic courthouse square. Matthew Dedmon, a 47-year-old pastor from Springfield, had driven to the location to meet his wife. He discovered her in a car with Newburn, fueling his suspicions of an affair. In a sudden act of violence, Dedmon allegedly retrieved a pistol from his truck and shot Newburn three times in the chest.
Law enforcement officers who responded to the scene took Dedmon into custody as a person of interest. The firearm believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered from his vehicle. Following an investigation, Dedmon was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. He was initially held without bond at the Christian County Detention Center.
After spending two years in jail, Dedmon was granted a $30,000 bond. A judge had previously denied bond, citing the potential danger Dedmon posed to the community. The case has experienced delays due to disputes over discovery between the prosecution and defense. His murder trial is scheduled to begin on March 3.
