In the summer of 1919, in the town of Vinita, Oklahoma, a tumultuous relationship came to a violent and tragic end for a woman named Elzadah Lockwood. A widow, she had recently remarried a man named Lee Monroe Betterton, a man with a dark and violent past that was seemingly unknown to her. Their relationship was fraught with conflict from the very beginning, marked by constant arguments that foreshadowed the impending tragedy.

On July 9, 1919, the cycle of conflict reached its devastating climax. Following another heated argument, Elzadah was preparing to leave her son-in-law's house. As she was leaving, Betterton, in a final act of brutality, shot her three times in the back. The injuries were catastrophic; one of the bullets destroyed the right side of her heart, and she died before authorities could arrive.
Lee Monroe Betterton was arrested for the murder of his wife. His violent history, which included the deaths of two previous wives, was brought to light. For the murder of Elzadah Lockwood, he was tried, convicted, and ultimately executed for his crime.
