A tragic and unforeseen chain of events on a spring evening in Milwaukee led to the death of 15-year-old Rasheed T. Chiles, a Black/African American male. On April 12, 2015, a van driven by Archie Brown Jr. struck Rasheed's 2-year-old brother, Damani Terry, who had unexpectedly run into the street. Brown immediately stopped to check on the young child.
In the moments that followed, a devastating escalation occurred.
The boys' uncle, Ricky Chiles, emerged and, upon seeing his injured nephew, produced a firearm. He is believed to have fatally shot Archie Brown Jr. In the chaotic spray of bullets, Rasheed Chiles was accidentally struck. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries later that night during surgery.
The suspect in the shootings, Ricky Chiles, fled the scene. A warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with the deaths of both Archie Brown Jr. and Rasheed Chiles. Four days after the incident, as law enforcement closed in on his location at a hotel in the Chicago area, Ricky Chiles took his own life. Before his death, he contacted family members to apologize for his actions, expressing that he lost his sense of direction after seeing his young nephew fatally injured and couldn't live with the fact that he had also killed his other nephew.
