In the late evening hours of Friday, August 21, 2015, the life of 35-year-old Luis Santiago was tragically cut short in an alley near 31st and National in Milwaukee. His death marked a grim milestone for the city, as he became its 100th homicide victim of the year. The events leading to the fatal shooting began to unfold just after 7:00 p.m. when Santiago was approached by a group of three to five men.
What started as a confrontation quickly escalated into a brief but heated argument.
In the ensuing moments, the sound of gunfire echoed through the alley, and Luis Santiago was fatally wounded. As news of the shooting spread, a profound sense of loss rippled through his family and friends. The following day, more than 20 loved ones gathered for a vigil to remember the man they described as a friend and brother, writing messages to him as the sun went down. His sister, Cecilia Santiago, expressed the deep void his death created, stating, "I'm empty. I'm missing part of me. It's gone and I'll never get it back."
In the days that followed the shooting, the Milwaukee police investigation progressed. By Monday, August 24th, authorities announced that they had taken three individuals into custody in connection with the homicide. The police also indicated that they were actively seeking additional suspects who may have been involved in the incident that led to Santiago's death.
