In the late summer of 2015, the life of 17-year-old George V. Miller, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short on a Friday morning in La Crosse, Wisconsin. On August 21st, what began as an argument between one-time friends escalated into a fatal act of violence. Miller was shot multiple times on the 1300 block of Redfield Street in broad daylight, with nearly a dozen witnesses in the vicinity.
The initial shots were fired, and as Miller attempted to flee and hide, the gunman pursued him, ultimately ending his life.
The individual responsible for Miller's death was quickly identified as 19-year-old Deshawn M. Randall. Following the shooting, a felony warrant was issued for Randall's arrest. A search ensued, and later that same evening, around 10:45 p.m., authorities located Randall at an apartment on Denton Street. His apprehension was not immediate, as it resulted in a four-hour standoff with the La Crosse Police Department before he surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Deshawn Randall was charged with first-degree intentional homicide. He eventually pleaded guilty to the charge in February 2016. During the sentencing, it was revealed that the friendship between Randall and Miller had soured in the weeks leading up to the shooting. Family members of both the victim and the perpetrator expressed their shock and sorrow, struggling to understand how the relationship had deteriorated to such a violent end. In April 2016, Randall was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of George Miller, with the possibility of petitioning for parole after serving 25 years. The tragic event left a lasting scar on the community, with reports of ongoing tensions and retaliatory actions among local groups connected to the incident.
