In the crisp autumn air of November 2, 2019, the life of 18-year-old Javier R. Ayers, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in La Crosse, Wisconsin. On that Saturday evening, at approximately 9:40 pm, police responded to a report of a shooting in the 900 block of Copeland Avenue. They arrived to find Ayers lying on the ground in an alley near Copeland Park, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to the heart.
Despite being rushed to a local hospital by ambulance, he succumbed to his injury.
The investigation into the homicide led authorities to Shavonte Thompson. The motive for the shooting was reportedly connected to a feud involving Thompson's cousin, Monica Thompson. On the night of the incident, security footage and witness testimonies revealed that Thompson exited a vehicle, fired the shot that killed Ayers, and then fled the scene. His cousin, Odell Thompson, was also present during the shooting but testified that he did not witness the actual event, only that he knew his cousin had left the car when the shots were fired. Odell Thompson later reached a deal to avoid trial, which further implicated Shavonte.
In November 2021, a jury found Shavonte Thompson guilty of first-degree homicide. The prosecution presented compelling evidence, including the security footage and various testimonies that pieced together the events of that fatal night. While Thompson's defense argued that there was reasonable doubt about his direct involvement, the jury was convinced by the evidence presented. In early 2022, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a measure of legal closure to the family and community impacted by the violent loss of a young life.
