Tamecca A. Perry, a 23-year-old woman from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, tragically lost her life on March 6, 2016. Perry, who was nine months pregnant at the time, was shot and killed in her home during an altercation with Shanika Minor. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning near 30th and Auer. According to reports, Minor, who lived in the same duplex as Perry's mother, came to Perry's residence to settle an argument that had started over loud music a week prior.
The
confrontation escalated quickly. Minor's mother attempted to intervene and de-escalate the situation, but Minor, armed with a firearm, reached over her mother and shot Perry in the chest. Perry retreated into her home, where she collapsed and died in front of her two children. Her unborn child, who was due just days later, also did not survive the shooting.
Following the incident, Minor fled the scene and was on the run for nearly four months. She was eventually apprehended on July 1, 2016, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, after being added to the FBI's Top Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. In court, Minor pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree reckless homicide and one count of first-degree reckless homicide of an unborn child.
On August 24, 2017, a Milwaukee County judge sentenced Minor to 30 years in prison, followed by ten years of extended supervision. During the sentencing, Minor expressed remorse and apologized to Perry's family, although her attorney argued that the sentence was excessive. The judge, however, emphasized the gravity of bringing a gun to a verbal argument and the devastating impact of Minor's actions.
