Tzegai C. Hinson, aged 45, was found dead on June 11, 2016, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His body was discovered in a trash bin near 5th and Wright by a Milwaukee police officer who was alerted by a citizen reporting a foul odor emanating from the garbage cart. Upon investigation, the officer found Hinson's body inside the duct-taped garbage cart. An autopsy revealed that Hinson died from a gunshot wound to the head, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation into Hinson's death led to the arrest of Demarius Cage, a 42-year-old Milwaukee man. Cage was charged with first-degree intentional homicide, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, and possession of a firearm by a felon. According to the criminal complaint, Hinson had traveled from Georgia to Chicago to drop off his daughter and then planned to go to Milwaukee to meet someone who owed him money. Phone records indicated that Hinson's last contact was with a number associated with Cage on June 6, 2016.
Further investigation revealed that Cage had purchased a garbage cart, bleach, rubber gloves, duct tape, towels, mop accessories, and an automotive jack from a Home Depot on June 6, 2016. Surveillance footage from the store showed Cage leaving in a silver Chevrolet Traverse. The owner of the vehicle confirmed giving Cage a ride to the Home Depot. Phone records also placed Cage in the area where Hinson's body was found on June 7, 2016.
On June 21, 2016, Hinson's unoccupied vehicle was located, showing marks consistent with being lifted by a jack. Cage was arrested on June 27, 2016, at a residence near 39th Street and Hope Avenue. A search of the residence uncovered a. 380 caliber firearm, $17,600 in cash, and significant quantities of cocaine, marijuana, and heroin, along with packaging materials and a digital scale, indicating drug dealing activities.
The trial for Demarius Cage was set to begin on November 6, 2016. Hinson's family, represented by his sister Yuri Besselle Hinson, sought justice for his brutal murder and aimed to show the jury that Hinson was more than just a victim.
