In the summer of 2016, a gathering of mourners outside a Milwaukee tavern turned into the scene of a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 29-year-old Jovanni Sims, a Black male. The incident occurred on the evening of July 18, 2016, outside of Elim's Lounge, where friends and family had congregated following the funeral of another man who had been a victim of gun violence just a week prior.
Inside the lounge, an altercation unfolded between Sims and another man, later identified as
Curtis Brown. Surveillance footage from within the establishment captured Brown punching Sims in the face. Following the initial confrontation, Sims was seen exiting the tavern. Brown followed him out, and exterior cameras recorded Sims walking around the block while Brown loitered near the bar's entrance. Moments later, the surveillance footage captured a muzzle flash. Sims was discovered lying next to his burgundy Lexus, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators at the scene recovered ten 9mm and five. 40-caliber shell casings, indicating the deadly violence of the encounter.
The investigation into the death of Jovanni Sims moved forward with the help of crucial evidence from the surveillance videos and a tip from an informant. The distinctive red Converse sneakers and "faux-hawk" hairstyle worn by the man who punched Sims in the video were key identifiers. The informant led police to a residence where they found Curtis Brown on the front porch, still wearing the same red sneakers and black shorts seen in the footage. A significant piece of forensic evidence further solidified the case against him when his palm print was found on the front bumper of Sims' car.
Despite Brown's repeated denials of his presence at the scene of the crime, he was arrested and charged with first-degree reckless homicide for the shooting death of Jovanni Sims. He pleaded not guilty, and his bail was set at $100,000. Following a trial, a jury found Curtis Brown guilty of the charges. He later sought to have his conviction overturned, claiming ineffective assistance from his trial counsel, but his motion was denied after an evidentiary hearing.
