David L. Couture, 25, male, died on January 16, 2017, in Johnson Creek, Wisconsin, after a violent episode inside his grandmother’s home. Around 4:39 a.m., a 911 caller reported that the 81-year-old woman had been badly injured and that a baseball bat was on the floor beside her. Deputies and medics rushed to the Village Terrace mobile home community, where the woman’s injuries suggested she had been beaten throughout her body. Couture and his grandmother were taken to the hospital; he was pronounced dead there.

Investigators with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office determined that Couture had attacked his grandmother with an aluminum baseball bat and then shot himself with a handgun. Neighbors told local reporters the scene inside the home was chaotic and bloody, and that the grandmother underwent multiple surgeries but survived. Authorities said the motive was unknown.

Public death records and victim memorial listings confirm Couture’s identity, age, and the date and place of his death. Community memorial pages note that his death occurred in Johnson Creek on January 16, 2017.

No arrests were made in connection with his death, and investigators did not seek additional suspects. Law enforcement treated the incident as an attempted murder–suicide carried out within the home, with the fatal gunshot being self-inflicted.
