On a cold winter day in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the life of Lawrence Hamilton, a 26-year-old Black/African American male, was violently cut short. On January 26, 2019, Hamilton was shot and killed in the 2400 block of North 33rd Street. His death was not an isolated incident but rather a tragic chapter in an escalating and brutal feud between rival street gangs in the city.
Authorities have indicated that Hamilton was a known member of a Milwaukee street gang, and his murder was a direct result of this ongoing conflict.
The violence connected to Lawrence Hamilton did not end with his death. In a shocking act of disrespect that further inflamed the gang war, his grave was later desecrated by members of a rival gang. Investigators believe this act was a significant factor in the continuation of violent retaliations, including a shooting that occurred at a funeral home during the services for another individual connected to the feud. This cycle of violence prompted a significant response from law enforcement, including federal agencies.
Despite the extensive investigation into the warring gangs by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives the Milwaukee Police Department, and the FBI, no arrests have been made specifically in connection with Lawrence Hamilton's murder. While the broader federal investigation has led to numerous charges against members of these gangs for a variety of crimes, including fraud and other acts of violence, the individuals directly responsible for shooting Hamilton have not been brought to justice. His case officially remains open, another unsolved homicide in a city plagued by gang-related violence, leaving a family and community waiting for closure that has yet to come.
