On May 8, 2019, a dispute that began over a small amount of money tragically cut short the life of Orlando Euell, a 44-year-old Black/African American man, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. On that spring morning, Euell was found lying on the side of the road near 25th and Pierce Street, bleeding from a single gunshot wound to his neck. First responders arrived at the scene, but his injury was too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing Euell being pushed out of a parked vehicle before it sped away, leaving a shocking scene in the Mitchell Park neighborhood.
The events that led to the fatal encounter began earlier in the day when Euell approached a woman, later identified as 21-year-old Keaira Walker, to purchase pain medication. He got into her Pontiac G6 with two other women inside. An agreement was made for a certain amount, but during the drive, Euell stated he wanted to spend less than the promised sum. This change sparked a heated argument. The dispute escalated rapidly, and Walker, who was in the driver's seat, grabbed a revolver and pointed it at Euell. A struggle ensued inside the car, and a single shot was fired, striking Euell in the neck. As he slumped against the car door, the vehicle came to a stop, and his body was pushed out onto the street.
In the initial stages of the investigation, detectives had few leads. There were no direct witnesses to the shooting itself, making the case challenging. The critical breakthrough came from surveillance footage. Investigators meticulously tracked Euell's last moments using CCTV cameras, which showed him getting into the Pontiac G6 at a gas station at South 27th and National Avenue. Police traced the vehicle's license plate to Keaira Walker. The investigation was further aided by two other women who were in the car and witnessed the entire event. They provided statements to the police detailing the argument over money and the subsequent shooting.
Within a week, authorities located and arrested Keaira Walker. She was charged with felony murder, attempted armed robbery, and possession of a firearm by a felon, as she was on probation for a prior armed robbery conviction. In March 2020, Walker accepted a plea deal and pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree reckless homicide with the use of a dangerous weapon. The other charges were dismissed. In September 2020, a judge sentenced her to 16 years in prison, followed by 10 years of extended supervision for her role in the death of Orlando Euell.
