On a summer evening in Madison, Wisconsin, the life of 18-year-old Dembo Jammeh, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On June 30, 2020, Jammeh was found in the parking lot of a Red Roof Inn. He had been shot and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The events that led to his death began with a dispute at a nearby gas station. Following the altercation, Jammeh was followed to the hotel.
Surveillance footage captured another man following him to the Red Roof Inn, where the fatal shooting occurred. Jammeh's body was discovered at the bottom of an exterior staircase.
In connection with the shooting, the Madison Police Department's Violent Crime Unit arrested 19-year-old Jalyn Cain-Roberson. He was taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree intentional homicide.
Cain-Roberson later pleaded guilty to a charge of first-degree reckless homicide as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. In exchange for his plea, charges of first-degree intentional homicide and bail-jumping were to be dismissed. The prosecution stated they would recommend a sentence that included no more than 20 years of incarceration, although the judge had the discretion to impose a sentence of up to 60 years. Cain-Roberson's $1 million bail was revoked as he awaited sentencing.
