In the early morning hours of October 3, 2020, the life of Chelsey Renee Payton, a 26-year-old Black/African American woman, was tragically cut short in Beloit, Wisconsin. The incident unfolded around 2:00 a.m. near the intersection of Park and Grand avenues, where a gathering had taken place. Following a party, numerous gunshots were fired into a large crowd of people.
Payton was struck by the gunfire and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Another individual, a 32-year-old man, was also wounded in the shooting but his injuries were not life-threatening, and he was released from the hospital after treatment. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a man firing into the crowd. Despite evidence of many shots being fired, the Beloit Police Department has not publicly identified a suspect in the homicide, and no arrests have been made.
In the wake of her death, Chelsey Renee Payton's family was left to grieve the loss of a mother of five children. A GoFundMe page was established to help support her children. The investigation into her murder has been hampered by a culture of silence, a recurring issue in Beloit that has left a number of homicide cases, including Payton's, unsolved. Authorities have appealed to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest and bring closure to a grieving family and community.
