On a summer evening in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the life of an 18-year-old Black / African American woman, Kaniya P. Wilborn Williams, was tragically cut short. On June 10, 2021, the aspiring nurse was fatally shot on the city's north side, in the vicinity of 64th and Carmen. She had been with individuals she believed were her friends at the time of the incident.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Kaniya was transported to a hospital.
Her last words before undergoing surgery were a message for her mother: "Tell my mom I love her." Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries, leaving a void in the lives of her family and friends. Described as a bright and loving person with a passion for helping others and a love for animals, her death sent ripples of grief through her community.
The investigation into Kaniya's death has been met with frustration and a painful lack of closure for her family. As time passed, no arrests were made, and the case remains unsolved. Kaniya's mother, Keyanna Wilborn, has publicly expressed her anguish and dissatisfaction with the progress of the investigation, stating that her calls to the Milwaukee Police Department have gone unanswered. In her quest for justice, she has taken it upon herself to seek out answers and appeal to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest. The family's pain is compounded by the absence of suspects and the feeling that more could be done to solve the case.
