Eleven-year-old TaNiyla Parker, a Black/African American female, had a bright future ahead of her, with dreams of becoming a lawyer or an architect. She was a creative and caring older sister, once building an elaborate cardboard dollhouse for her younger sibling. Her aspirations were tragically cut short on the evening of October 2, 2021, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
That day, TaNiyla was in a car with her family, including her five-year-old sister, near North Sherman Boulevard and West
Burleigh Street. In a senseless act of road rage, another driver, later identified as 24-year-old Antonius Trotter, opened fire on their vehicle. The bullets struck both TaNiyla and her younger sister. The shooting immediately sparked outrage and sorrow within the Milwaukee community, with activists gathering at the scene with signs demanding an end to the violence that was claiming the lives of children.
In the aftermath of the shooting, investigators quickly began to piece together the evidence that would lead them to the person responsible. A month after the incident, Antonius Trotter was arrested and charged in connection with the shooting. The legal proceedings that followed culminated in a jury convicting Trotter for the murder of TaNiyla, the injury of her sister, and the illegal possession of a firearm.
During an emotional sentencing hearing, TaNiyla's mother, Talea Hairston, expressed the profound and enduring pain of her loss. She shared with the court the difficulty of contemplating forgiveness in the face of such a devastating act. Trotter, who had a criminal history that began at a young age, maintained his innocence at the sentencing and indicated his intention to appeal the verdict. He was ultimately sentenced to 60 years in prison for his actions. The judge, in delivering the sentence, noted Trotter's escalating pattern of violence and lack of regard for others. TaNiyla's younger sister, who was wounded in the attack, also spoke in court, her soft voice conveying a simple and powerful message of how much she missed her older sister.
