On the morning of June 11, 2022, Marshell Harris, a 51-year-old Black/African American woman, was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The incident occurred around 7:50 a.m. near the intersection of 39th and Hadley Streets. Harris was driving her car with her daughter as a passenger at the time of the attack.
According to the criminal complaint, as Harris was turning onto Hadley from an alley, a blue SUV pulled alongside their vehicle and began to follow them.
The driver of the SUV, wearing sunglasses and a mask, raised a gun and fired multiple shots into Harris's car. The car sustained several bullet holes on the driver's side before crashing into a fence. An autopsy later confirmed that Harris suffered gunshot wounds to her head, chest, and other areas of her body. Police recovered eleven bullet casings at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide led to the arrest of 39-year-old Quantae Hines. Harris's daughter told police that she knew Hines and that he was aware of her schedule. Surveillance video from a nearby home captured the sound of multiple gunshots followed by a blue SUV, matching the description of the suspect's vehicle, entering the frame. The same SUV, which had front-end damage, was spotted on surveillance footage a few blocks away. Police determined the vehicle was registered to an incarcerated family member of Hines.
On June 13, 2022, law enforcement located and arrested Hines at a residence on Milwaukee's south side. The suspect's blue SUV was found parked behind the building. In a vacant unit that had been broken into, officers discovered a gun hidden under an oven. Ballistics testing confirmed a high probability that the bullets from the crime scene were fired from this weapon. Hines has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
