In the early morning hours of July 1, 2022, a tragic incident unfolded in a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, home that claimed the life of 3-year-old Akai Stilo, a Black male child. The young boy discovered a firearm that had been left unattended in the living room of the residence located near 20th and Highland. He accidentally shot himself, sustaining fatal injuries. First responders were called to the home just before 4:45 a.m. and found the child's mother in distress outside. Akai was rushed to Children's Wisconsin, but lifesaving measures were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced deceased.

The investigation into Akai's death led to the immediate arrest of a 28-year-old woman, who was later identified as the child's mother. Subsequently, her 28-year-old boyfriend, Raheem Moore, was also taken into custody and faced multiple charges in connection with the tragic event. Authorities determined that the firearm belonged to Moore, who was reportedly asleep on the couch when the toddler found the weapon. It was alleged that Moore fled the scene while the boy's mother was calling for help.

Further investigation revealed that Moore was a convicted felon and legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. He was charged with neglecting a child with the consequence of death, second-degree reckless homicide, and three counts of possession of a firearm by a felon. During a search of the home, investigators discovered a duffel bag in the basement containing multiple guns and suspected marijuana. Moore had a prior conviction for second-degree reckless homicide in 2012 and had been released on extended supervision in 2019. His bond was set at $75,000 cash.
