In the summer of 1902, a widespread manhunt for an escaped convict cast a shadow of fear across the Pacific Northwest. This extensive search would ultimately lead to the tragic death of 42-year-old White / Caucasian male, Detective Charles Raymond of the Everett Police Department. A dedicated officer with a decade of service, his life was cut short on July 3, 1902, during a confrontation with the fugitive.
The chain of events leading to that fatal day began on June 9, 1902, when Harry
Tracy, a notorious outlaw, escaped from the Oregon State Penitentiary. Tracy's escape was a violent one, resulting in the deaths of three correctional officers. In the weeks that followed, Tracy's rampage continued as he evaded capture, his name becoming synonymous with danger throughout the region. Law enforcement agencies across multiple states were on high alert, desperate to bring his crime spree to an end.
On that early July day, Detective Raymond was part of a posse searching a wooded area along the train tracks between Woodinville and Wayne, Washington. The officers had received information that Tracy might be in the vicinity. As they combed the area, they walked into an ambush set by the very man they were hunting. Tracy opened fire on the unsuspecting officers. Detective Raymond was struck by the gunfire and killed instantly. Another officer, Deputy John Williams of the King County Sheriff's Department, was wounded in the attack.
The manhunt for Harry Tracy intensified after the murder of Detective Raymond. His violent spree continued, leading to the deaths of several other law enforcement officers. The extensive search finally came to a dramatic and bloody conclusion on August 6, 1902. After being wounded in yet another shootout with a posse in Lincoln County, Washington, Harry Tracy took his own life. Detective Charles Raymond was survived by his wife and five children, his death a significant loss to the Everett community he had sworn to protect.
