On a summer evening in Federal Way, Washington, the life of 26-year-old Hispanic man, Omero Garcia Mendez, was tragically cut short. On August 14, 2008, Mendez was patiently waiting at the Lakota Middle School campus to pick up his girlfriend's son. The ordinary task took a fatal turn when he was confronted by three individuals in an SUV.
One of the occupants, 16-year-old Luis F. Cosgaya-Alvarez, reportedly flashed gang signs at Mendez before shooting him once in the head.
The sudden act of violence left Mendez with a fatal injury, and he later succumbed to the wound. The motive appeared to be rooted in a senseless gang-related confrontation.
In the days that followed the shooting, authorities launched an investigation that quickly led them to the suspected shooter. Luis F. Cosgaya-Alvarez was located and arrested in Seattle a few days after the incident.
