In the early morning hours of June 9, 2014, a quiet street in Vancouver, Washington, became the scene of a domestic tragedy. Inside their home in the North Image neighborhood, 49-year-old Danny Lee Luster fatally shot his wife and critically wounded his son before turning the gun on himself. The incident, which unfolded around 5:20 a.m., was classified by authorities as a murder-suicide, leaving a family shattered and a community in shock.
Neighbors were first alerted to the violence by
the sounds of gunshots and screaming emanating from the Luster residence. When Vancouver police officers arrived at the home on Northeast 52nd Street, they discovered a grim scene. Danny Lee Luster was found deceased in the living room from what the Clark County Medical Examiner's Office would later determine was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and neck. In a bedroom, officers found the body of his 49-year-old wife, Sandra Luster, who had been shot in the head. The family's dog had also been killed.
Their 23-year-old son, Matthew, was found in another bedroom, seriously injured but still alive. He had sustained a close-range gunshot wound to the abdomen from an SKS rifle while attempting to intervene and stop his father's rampage. Matthew Luster was rushed to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in critical condition. He underwent surgery and his condition was later upgraded to serious.
Investigations into the incident revealed that Danny Luster had been struggling with depression in the time leading up to the tragedy. According to a search warrant affidavit, his family was in the process of seeking mental health treatment for him. A prescription for alprazolam, a medication used to treat anxiety and depression, was found in the home. Authorities also recovered several firearms from the residence, including five rifles and two shotguns. As the perpetrator was deceased, there were no arrests or suspects sought in connection with the case. A friend of the family noted that Danny Luster had been under significant stress after recently losing his job.
