Patrick M. Alltus, a 39-year-old White male, was found deceased in his Riverside, Washington, home on October 5, 2014. A friend of Alltus discovered his body at his residence on Hosheit Road and alerted the authorities. Responding deputies from the Okanogan County Sheriff's Office found a scene marked by significant violence. An autopsy later confirmed that Alltus had died from multiple gunshot wounds. The investigation also revealed a blunt force injury to his forehead.
His body was discovered wrapped in blankets with a plastic bag over his head.
The investigation quickly focused on two teenagers who had been living with Alltus: his 16-year-old niece, Shalin E. Alltus, and her 16-year-old boyfriend, Parker M. Bachtold. The pair had only been residing with Patrick Alltus for two weeks, having moved from the Yakima area. Prior to living with her uncle, Shalin had been at a crisis center. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, the two teenagers were missing, as was Alltus's pickup truck. An alert was issued for the teens and the stolen vehicle, with a warning that they could be armed with a shotgun and a pistol.
The two suspects were located and apprehended in Douglas County, Oregon, south of Eugene. They were in possession of Patrick Alltus's stolen pickup truck. Initially taken into custody for the vehicle theft, detectives from the Okanogan County Sheriff's Office traveled to Oregon to question them in connection with the homicide. Inside the motel room where the teens were found, authorities also located Alltus's. 22 caliber rifle and. 410 shotgun.
Although both initially denied their involvement in the murder, Bachtold eventually admitted his role in the shooting. The subsequent legal proceedings revealed that both teenagers were involved in the killing. While a definitive motive remained unclear, an Okanogan County jury found both Shalin E. Alltus and Parker M. Bachtold guilty of the murder of Patrick M. Alltus.
