On a summer night in Mukilteo, Washington, a gathering of friends at a house party turned into a scene of tragedy on July 30, 2016. Among the victims was Jordan Michael Ebner, a 19-year-old Caucasian male from the area. The celebration, attended by about fifteen to twenty young people, many of whom were graduates of Kamiak High School, was shattered by gunfire shortly after midnight.
The perpetrator was identified as 19-year-old Allen Christopher Ivanov, a former classmate of many of the attendees and a student at the University of Washington Bothell.
Ivanov arrived at the party and initially observed the gathering unarmed. He later retrieved an AR-15-style rifle from his vehicle and concealed himself near the house. His first victim was Jake Long, who discovered him hiding. After killing Long, Ivanov continued his shooting spree outside, injuring another individual before turning his attention to Jordan Ebner, who was also outside. He then entered the home and shot his ex-girlfriend, Anna Bui, multiple times. In total, three young people lost their lives that night: Jordan Ebner, Jake Long, and Anna Bui, all 19 years old. A fourth person, Will Kramer, was seriously injured but survived. The entire horrific event lasted approximately 35 seconds.
After running out of ammunition, Ivanov fled the scene. Law enforcement was able to track him by pinging his cellphone. Ninety minutes after the shooting, he was arrested without incident by state troopers over 100 miles away near Chehalis. An AR-15-type rifle and two magazines were found in his car. During questioning, Ivanov confessed to the killings, stating that his motive was jealousy over his recent breakup with Anna Bui. In the days leading up to the attack, he had made troubling posts on social media and had purchased the rifle just a week prior.
Allen Ivanov was charged with three counts of aggravated first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of first-degree assault. He initially pleaded not guilty. However, in December 2016, to avoid the possibility of the death penalty, Ivanov changed his plea to guilty. On January 12, 2017, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. During his sentencing, he expressed remorse and claimed that "Satan was in control" at the time of the shooting. The families of the victims shared their profound grief and anger in court, remembering the lives that were senselessly cut short.
