In the midst of a turbulent series of gang-related shootings in Pasco, Washington, a 20-year-old Hispanic male named Anthony Guerrero was killed on the night of November 19, 2014. Guerrero was with his cousin and another man, sitting in a car on West Marie Street when two individuals opened fire on the vehicle. The hail of bullets resulted in Guerrero’s death from his gunshot wounds.
Friends and family described him as a family man who was not involved in gangs and was tragically in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The death of Guerrero was intertwined with a string of violent events that had begun the previous night. On November 18, DeShawn I. Anderson, a friend of Guerrero's, was allegedly involved in a shooting where he and another person fired nearly 20 rounds into a car occupied by four men, injuring three of them. This initial act of violence is believed to have set off a chain of retaliatory actions. The attack that claimed Anthony Guerrero's life the following night is thought to have been a response to the shooting involving Anderson.
In the wake of his friend's murder, DeShawn I. Anderson reportedly sought vengeance. Believing that a rival gang was responsible for Guerrero's death, Anderson allegedly targeted and killed 22-year-old Lorenzo "Richie" Fernandez Jr. on December 3, 2014. Anderson was later arrested and faced charges for the murder of Fernandez and the earlier assault. While Anderson was convicted for these crimes and sentenced to a lengthy prison term, no one has been formally charged in the direct killing of Anthony Guerrero. The second shooter in the incident that led to Guerrero's death has not been publicly identified.
