In the winter of 2016, the life of a 47-year-old Black / African American woman, Anna M. Hargett, was brought to an abrupt and violent end in Yakima, Washington. On the evening of January 22nd, a dispute escalated into a fatal confrontation outside her residence near the 1100 block of Roosevelt Avenue. The argument, which reportedly stemmed from a drug-related issue, culminated in a single gunshot.
The bullet struck Anna in the lower neck, fatally wounding her and also critically injuring another woman who was nearby at the time. This incident marked the third homicide in the city that year, prompting an immediate and intensive investigation by the Yakima Police Department, who quickly determined the shooting was not a random act.
As authorities delved into the case, a primary suspect emerged: 37-year-old Ricardo Ochoa Dimas. Investigators pieced together the events of that night, largely through the testimony of Anna's niece, who witnessed the tragedy unfold. She recounted how a group, including Dimas, had arrived at their home demanding money related to a prior drug transaction. In the ensuing confrontation, Anna allegedly threatened the group with an ax. According to her niece, she had discarded the weapon just before Dimas fired the single shot that ended her life. In the immediate aftermath, Dimas vanished, sparking a manhunt that would last for nearly three weeks.
The search for Ricardo Ochoa Dimas concluded with his capture, though he did not surrender peacefully. Authorities located him disguised in a wig, a beanie, and sunglasses in an attempt to conceal his identity. He resisted arrest and had to be tased twice before he was taken into custody. During his trial, the prosecution presented surveillance footage and other evidence to argue the charge of murder. The defense countered with a claim of self-defense, centering their argument on the victim's alleged threat with the ax. The jury was left to weigh the conflicting narratives of a heated confrontation that tragically turned deadly.
