On a summer night in Mukilteo, Washington, a gathering of friends turned into a scene of tragedy. Anna Bui, a 19-year-old female of Vietnamese-American descent, was at a house party with her peers, mostly recent graduates from Kamiak High School. She was a student at the University of Washington's Bothell campus and had her whole life ahead of her.
The party, filled with the laughter and promise of youth, was shattered by the arrival of her ex-boyfriend, Allen Christopher Ivanov, also 19.
Upset over their recent breakup and consumed by jealousy after seeing social media posts that suggested she was moving on, Ivanov had planned his attack. In the days leading up to July 30, 2016, he purchased an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. That evening, he drove to the party and parked across the street, watching the house. For a time, he sat in his car and read the instruction manual for the weapon he had just acquired. After observing the party and seeing Anna with someone else, he retrieved the rifle. He then crept around the house, and after being discovered by a partygoer, he began shooting.
The gunfire erupted suddenly, turning a joyous occasion into chaos and terror. Ivanov fired multiple shots, striking several people. Anna Bui was fatally wounded, along with two other 19-year-olds, Jacob Long and Jordan Ebner. A fourth individual, Will Kramer, 18, was injured but survived the attack. After the shooting, Ivanov fled the scene in his car. His escape was short-lived, as Washington State Patrol troopers arrested him on Interstate 5 about ninety minutes later, more than 100 miles away from the home.
Following his arrest, Allen Ivanov confessed to the killings. He was charged with aggravated first-degree murder, attempted murder, and assault. To avoid the death penalty, Ivanov pleaded guilty to the charges. On January 12, 2017, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing the legal chapter of the devastating event to a close. The community mourned the loss of the three young lives, holding vigils and remembering Anna as a hardworking and inspiring young woman who wished to spread love to others.
