Danette Ann Kane, aged 59, tragically passed away on December 19, 2017, in Spokane, Washington. Danette, known affectionately as Dee, was born on October 14, 1958, in Butte, Montana. She was the eldest of five daughters and attended Catholic schools, graduating from Butte Central in 1976. She later earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Montana Tech in 1980.
Danette Kane's death was the result of a violent crime. She was the owner of the Westview Manor apartment complex in Spokane.
On the day of her death, she was fatally shot by Anne Carpenter, a 27-year-old woman. The incident also involved the apartment manager, Michael Troy, who was shot and left blind as a result of his injuries.
Anne Carpenter was arrested a few days after the incident, following a city-wide police search that ended near the NorthTown Mall. She was found armed with a 9mm handgun. The motive behind the killing was reportedly linked to Carpenter's father facing eviction from the apartment complex, although the Kane family denied any knowledge of such an eviction.
In October 2021, Anne Carpenter pleaded guilty in Spokane County Superior Court to first-degree murder and second-degree assault. The plea agreement included a 25-year prison sentence, with an additional five years for a firearm enhancement. The second-degree assault sentence was to be served concurrently with the murder sentence. The Kane family, represented by retired Spokane County Superior Court Judge Jerome Leveque, unanimously agreed not to object to the plea agreement.
