On a summer afternoon in Hazel Dell, Washington, a dispute between roommates escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 45-year-old Michael Neil Brachais, a Caucasian male. The events of July 6, 2021, unfolded at a house on Northwest 82nd Street, where Brachais resided with his roommate, Justin Nicholas Romero, who was 31 at the time. An ongoing conflict over Romero's desire for Brachais to move out of the residence served as the backdrop for the fatal confrontation.

Neighbors became unwitting witnesses to the unfolding violence when they heard gunshots. One neighbor reported seeing a woman exit the house and frantically ask a passing motorist to call 911. Shortly after, the same woman was seen leaving the residence again, this time with a baby and three other children, getting into an SUV driven by a man and speeding away from the scene. When law enforcement arrived, they found Brachais deceased inside the home near the front door, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The Clark County Medical Examiner's Office would later rule his death a homicide.

The investigation quickly zeroed in on Justin Nicholas Romero as the primary suspect. Evidence at the scene included empty. 40-caliber bullet casings. Investigators also discovered a calendar in Romero's bedroom with entries that appeared to allude to a growing conflict with Brachais. Romero was apprehended the following day at a residence in Camas. Witness testimonies, including that of a woman present at the house, detailed a heated argument between the two men preceding the gunshots. She recounted hearing Romero yelling at Brachais to leave and Brachais's defiant response to "Just shoot me."

Justin Nicholas Romero was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Michael Brachais. In August 2022, Romero pleaded guilty to the charge in Clark County Superior Court. He was subsequently sentenced to more than 10 years in prison for the fatal shooting of his roommate, bringing a legal conclusion to the violent altercation that ended a man's life.
