Khalid Al-Hassan, a 38-year-old man from Hazel Dell, Washington, was tragically killed in July 2023. His death was initially discovered when human remains were found inside a burned vehicle in a Hazel Dell driveway in August 2023. The Clark County Sheriff's Office later confirmed that Al-Hassan's cause of death was homicide by another person or persons.
Logan Melchert, a 35-year-old Vancouver man, has been arrested and charged in connection with Al-Hassan's death. Melchert, who was Al-Hassan's roommate, is accused of killing him in July and then attempting to conceal the crime by burning the body in Cowlitz County and later at the Hazel Dell house.
Initially, Melchert faced charges of second-degree arson and unlawful disposal of human remains. However, as the investigation progressed, he was additionally charged with second-degree murder. Melchert appeared in Clark County Superior Court on October 10, 2023, where Judge David Gregerson increased his bail from $1 million to $1.5 million.
The case took an unexpected turn when an inmate at the Clark County Jail overheard Melchert discussing the incident with others. This inmate reported the information to detectives on September 28, 2023, leading to the murder charge.
Investigators believe that the motive for the killing may have been related to inheritance. It is alleged that Melchert killed Al-Hassan to prevent him from receiving an inheritance that was intended for Melchert's sister.
The identification of Al-Hassan's remains was confirmed through dental records. Prior to the discovery, Al-Hassan had not been in contact with his family and friends, which likely delayed the reporting of his disappearance.
