Deputy Sheriff Richard Read of the Hardin County Sheriff's Department in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, met a tragic end on July 22, 1901. He was fatally shot while attempting to maintain order at a public picnic. The incident began when Read confronted a man who was causing a disturbance. When ordered to be quiet, the suspect drew a revolver and shot Read twice. A bystander, witnessing the altercation, returned fire and seriously wounded the suspect.
