In the small community of Wallins Creek, Kentucky, a lawman met a violent and untimely end. Deputy Sheriff Samuel Henry Bailey, a male officer with the Harlan County Sheriff's Office, was killed in the line of duty.
On Tuesday, November 14, 1911, Deputy Bailey was tasked with serving an arrest warrant on his own son-in-law. While attempting to carry out this duty in the Wallins Creek area, he was shot.
He succumbed to the gunshot wound early the next morning, on Wednesday, November 15, 1911.
The suspect, Bailey's son-in-law, was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged with murder. Following a trial, he was convicted of the crime on April 20, 1912, and sentenced to 21 years in prison. Deputy Bailey was survived by his wife and daughter.
