On a tragic autumn day in Allen, Kentucky, the lives of five men, including 28-year-old Michael Joe Halbert, were violently cut short. The date was October 16, 1981, when a retired coal miner named William 'Okie' Bevins, aged 70, walked into an auto parts store and opened fire, killing five people and wounding three others. Halbert, a co-owner of the store, was among those who perished in the hail of bullets.
The other men who lost their lives were Jarvey Hamilton, 27, Roger Dale Click, 28, Roger Hatfield, 34, and Rufus Hamilton, 42.
The horrific event was not a random act of violence. The investigation revealed that the primary target of Bevins' rage was Roger Click. The motive was believed to be a dispute between Bevins and Click concerning Click's wife. Michael Joe Halbert and the other victims were tragically in the wrong place at the wrong time, becoming collateral damage in Bevins' murderous plot to eliminate any potential witnesses to his crime. Eyewitnesses reported seeing Bevins and Click arguing shortly before the shooting began.
Following the massacre, William 'Okie' Bevins fled the scene and returned to his home. He was later found by law enforcement calmly sitting on his porch and was arrested without incident. The weapon used in the shooting was later recovered from a well on his property. Bevins, who had a previous murder conviction from 1930, initially pleaded not guilty to the five counts of murder. However, after the trial began, he changed his plea to guilty.
Bevins was subsequently sentenced to death for his crimes. However, due to a Supreme Court ruling that found the death penalty unconstitutional at the time, his sentence was later commuted to life in prison. William 'Okie' Bevins, the man responsible for the deaths of Michael Joe Halbert and four others, would ultimately die behind bars.
