In the small community of Allen, Kentucky, the autumn of 1981 was shattered by a violent and tragic event that would leave a lasting scar. On October 16th, Jarvey Hamilton, a 27-year-old man, was at the Mountain Auto-Truck Parts Store when his life was cut short in a hail of gunfire. The perpetrator was 70-year-old William 'Okie' Bevins, a retired coal miner who entered the establishment with an automatic rifle and opened fire, forever altering the lives of many.
The motive for this
horrific act stemmed from a personal dispute between Bevins and another man present at the auto parts store, Roger Click. The disagreement, reportedly involving Click's wife, escalated to a point of no return in Bevins's mind. In a cold and calculated attack, he aimed to eliminate not only Click but anyone who could potentially identify him as the gunman. In the ensuing chaos, four other men, including Jarvey Hamilton, were fatally wounded. The other victims were Rufus Hamilton, Roger Hatfield, and Michael Halbert. In total, five men lost their lives, and three others were injured in the rampage.
Following the shooting, Bevins fled the scene and returned to his home. He was found by law enforcement sitting calmly on his porch, the weapon used in the killings reportedly disposed of in a well on his property. Bevins was taken into custody without incident.
During the subsequent legal proceedings, William Bevins initially entered a plea of not guilty. However, after the first witness testified, he changed his plea to guilty. He was ultimately sentenced to death for the murders. His sentence was later commuted to life in prison. Bevins died behind bars, leaving the community of Allen to grapple with the memory of the day violence erupted in their quiet town, and the senseless loss of life that occurred.
