On the evening of January 22, 2009, the quiet community of Dudleytown was disturbed by a 911 call reporting a woman had been shot inside her home. When officers from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department and the Indiana State Police arrived at the residence, they discovered the body of 39-year-old Nancy M. Bradley. She had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner.
Inside the home with Nancy was her husband, Bryon S.
Bradley, who was found with self-inflicted injuries in what appeared to be an attempted suicide. Also present in the house at the time of the incident was Nancy's 16-year-old son, who was physically unharmed. Authorities learned that while police had not previously been called to the Bradley's home, the couple had been experiencing some recent disputes.
Bryon S. Bradley, then 38, was treated for his injuries at a local medical center before being transferred to a hospital in Indianapolis. While hospitalized, he was kept under police watch.
