On a spring evening in Louisville, Kentucky, the life of 29-year-old Richard L. Spencer, a male resident of the Dosker Manor public housing complex, was tragically cut short. The events of May 13, 2014, unfolded in a grim narrative of violence that left one man dead and a community shaken. Spencer, who was reportedly confined to a wheelchair, found himself in a heated dispute that ultimately led to his untimely demise.
The altercation occurred in or around an elevator on the 12th floor
of one of the complex's buildings. In the midst of this confrontation, gunfire erupted. Spencer was struck multiple times in the torso. The violence of that moment also ensnared a 40-weeks-pregnant woman who was visiting someone in the building. She was tragically caught in the crossfire and shot twice in the abdomen. Both Spencer and the woman were rushed to University Hospital, where Spencer was pronounced dead. In a testament to the resilience of life, the expectant mother underwent an emergency C-section, and both she and her baby were reported to have survived the ordeal.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect. A few days later, Louisville Metro Police arrested 24-year-old Tyjuan Romel Moody in connection with the incident. Moody was subsequently charged with murder for the death of Richard Spencer, attempted murder for the injuries sustained by the pregnant woman, tampering with physical evidence, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. According to an arrest report, Moody admitted to his involvement in the shooting. He was lodged at Metro Corrections on a $100,000 bond. While an arrest was made, the specter of violence lingered over the Dosker Manor community, a stark reminder of a life lost and another forever altered.
