In the early morning hours of September 12, 2014, in Mayfield, Kentucky, the life of 17-year-old Michael “Eli” Mahoney was tragically cut short. The male teenager was killed in his home while bravely attempting to protect his mother, Kim Thomas, from her estranged boyfriend, Terry Froman. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots at approximately 5 a.m., shattering the quiet of the morning.
The tragic events began to unfold after Thomas ended her four-year relationship with Froman.
In the weeks that followed, Froman's behavior escalated, culminating in the violent encounter at their home. After fatally shooting Eli, Froman abducted his 34-year-old ex-girlfriend. The abduction was brought to the attention of law enforcement when a 911 call was made from a gas station in Paducah, Kentucky. Surveillance footage captured a harrowing scene: a naked and bloodied Kim Thomas attempting to escape Froman's vehicle before he forcibly pulled her back inside and fled.
Law enforcement officials launched a multi-state search for Froman and Thomas. Using cell phone pings, they tracked his vehicle as he drove into Ohio. Later that day, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers located and stopped Froman's SUV on Interstate 75. As they approached the vehicle, they heard gunshots. Inside, they found Kim Thomas deceased from multiple gunshot wounds and Terry Froman with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Froman, who was 41 at the time of the incident, was taken into custody and faced a multitude of charges in both Kentucky and Ohio, including murder and kidnapping. He was ultimately convicted for the murders of both Michael “Eli” Mahoney and Kim Thomas. For the murder of Eli, he was sentenced in Kentucky to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In Ohio, he was convicted for the kidnapping and murder of Kim Thomas and was sentenced to death. The Ohio Supreme Court later upheld his death sentence.
