In a hallway of the Russell Apartment Building in Louisville, Kentucky, the life of 31-year-old Andrew C. Key-Roper, a male resident of the complex, was tragically cut short. On the late afternoon of Wednesday, January 28, 2015, Key-Roper was fatally shot. The incident unfolded in the 500 block of South 18th Street.
According to police reports and family members, Key-Roper was intervening in an armed robbery targeting his brother when he was shot in the chest.
This act of courage ultimately cost him his life. The community was shaken by the violence, prompting calls from activists for a greater partnership between residents and the police to ensure safer streets.
In the early hours of the following morning, Louisville Metro Police arrested two 19-year-old suspects in connection with the fatal shooting. Maunyeh Haggard and Isaiah Jenkins were taken into custody. The police report identified Haggard as the shooter, based on statements from Jenkins and other witnesses at the scene. Both Haggard and Jenkins were charged with murder and robbery. Haggard also faced additional charges from separate incidents. Funeral services for Key-Roper were held that February, with visitation and a service at the Refuge in Kentucky Church.
