On a Friday afternoon in Winchester, Kentucky, the life of 54-year-old Melanie Gabbard was tragically cut short. On December 18, 2015, at her workplace, Palmer Engineering, a former romantic partner, 43-year-old Rick Lambert, entered the building and shot her before taking his own life. The incident, which occurred shortly after 12:30 p.m., was described as a murder-suicide.
Melanie, a Caucasian female, was a longtime, dedicated employee of Palmer Engineering for approximately 38 years,
having started part-time during high school. She had risen to the position of office manager. Her colleagues heard the gunshots but did not witness the shooting, which took place in her first-floor office. It was reported that Lambert went directly to her office, and no one else at the business was harmed or threatened.
The investigation into the incident concluded that it was a murder-suicide, and as a result, no arrests were made. Police searched Lambert's residence and recovered handwritten notes. The autopsies of both individuals were scheduled to be performed by the state medical examiner's office. Melanie was remembered by her community for her vibrant personality and dedication to her work and church.
