Kathleen M. Costello, a 35-year-old female, passed away on Thursday, April 26, 2018, in Winchester, Kentucky. Born in New York City on July 21, 1982, she was a resident of Winchester at the time of her death. Friends and family remember her as a kind and generous soul with a deep passion for horses. This passion led her to earn a bachelor's degree in Equine Science and build a life in the Lexington area, where she was active in the horse industry as a trainer and equine specialist.
The
circumstances of her death were tragic. Authorities were called to her home on Two Mile Road on the morning of April 26. Her husband, Herbert Ray Rice, 38, had contacted emergency dispatchers to report that he had shot his wife. Upon their arrival, sheriff's deputies secured the residence and, after attempting to make contact, heard a single gunshot from inside the house.
Inside the home, law enforcement discovered both Costello and Rice deceased from gunshot wounds in what was determined to be a murder-suicide. The investigation concluded that Rice shot his wife and then took his own life. Just days before the incident, on April 19, Rice had been arrested on 20 counts of possession of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor and one count of promoting a minor in a sexual performance. He had been released on a $15,000 cash bond shortly after his arrest.
