In the early morning hours of February 28, 2016, the life of 22-year-old Lauren Brooke Alexander of Mayfield, Kentucky, was tragically cut short. A young mother, she was at her home with her two-year-old son and two-month-old daughter when a man kicked in her front door with such force that the deadbolt was dislodged. The intruder, Ezell Miller, then entered the residence and confronted a guest, striking him in the head before the guest was able to flee.

Alexander in the weeks leading up to the incident by entering her home without permission, then turned his attention to the young woman. At close range, between one and four inches, he shot her in the face. After the shooting, Miller left Lauren bleeding and struggling to breathe in the presence of her two small children. It was approximately 45 minutes before he contacted 911 for help. During that time, he hid the. 357 Glock used in the shooting under the crawl space of his own home.
Lauren Alexander was found alive by Mayfield police officers, suffering from the gunshot wound. She was initially transported to Jackson Purchase Medical Center and later transferred to Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Despite medical efforts, she passed away from her injuries on February 29, 2016. The incident, which began as a home invasion and armed robbery, ended as a homicide investigation.
The investigation led to the arrest of Ezell Miller. In February 2020, following a four-day jury trial, Miller was found guilty of the murder of Lauren Alexander. In addition to the murder charge, he was also convicted of first-degree burglary, two counts of wanton endangerment, and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun. In May 2020, Ezell Miller was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of the young mother.
