In a heartbreaking turn of events in Louisville, Kentucky, four-year-old Courtney Grace Hettinger, a Caucasian female, lost her life on Sunday, March 20, 2016. Her death was part of a devastating murder-suicide orchestrated by her father, 33-year-old Brad Hettinger, an Army veteran.
The tragedy unfolded inside the family's home where Brad fatally shot his wife, 32-year-old Billie Jo Hettinger, and their two children, Courtney and her five-year-old brother Collin.
Following the shootings, he set multiple fires within the house before taking his own life. Firefighters were the first to arrive at the scene, initially responding to a fire alarm. The discovery of the bodies quickly turned the incident into a homicide investigation.
Authorities found the children in their beds on the second floor of the home. The coroner's office later confirmed that Courtney and her brother each died from a single gunshot wound to the head. Their mother was found in the basement, having sustained gunshot wounds to the chest and head. Brad Hettinger was found on the first floor with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
In the wake of the tragedy, family members revealed that Brad Hettinger had been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder following his military service, which included a tour in Iraq. They stated he had been actively seeking help for his condition and was also attending marriage counseling with his wife. Despite these efforts, the underlying reasons for his violent actions remain unclear, as police had no prior record of domestic violence at the residence. The community was left in shock by the loss of the young family.
