In the summer of 2016, the life of 29-year-old Donte Jefferson was tragically cut short. On the night of Tuesday, June 21, 2016, Jefferson was inside an apartment on Rodman Street near Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, when a gunman entered and opened fire. Jefferson, along with his 24-year-old cousin, Monte Compton, was fatally wounded in the attack. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.
Two other individuals in the apartment were also struck by gunfire and subsequently hospitalized.
The shooting prompted an immediate and intensive investigation by the Louisville Metro Police Department. Witnesses at the scene were able to identify the shooter, leading to a swift arrest in the double homicide. The day after the shooting, police apprehended Eric Anthony. He was charged with two counts of murder, as well as assault and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. According to court records, the violent encounter stemmed from a dispute over drug dealings. Anthony, who was on parole at the time of the incident, had a history of violent behavior. Following his arrest, a judge set his bond at $1 million.
Donte Jefferson was a father to fourteen children and was survived by his parents and several siblings. A year after his death, family and friends gathered at the scene of the shooting to remember him and his cousin, releasing balloons in their memory. They expressed both their enduring grief and their gratitude that a suspect had been quickly apprehended.
