In the autumn of 2016, a life was tragically cut short in Lexington, Kentucky. David Fletcher Jones, a 17-year-old male, was fatally wounded by a gunshot on a Friday afternoon in November. The incident unfolded in the basement of a house on Honey Jay Court, situated near Tates Creek High School. Though he was not a student in the Fayette County Public Schools system, the proximity of the shooting to the schools prompted precautionary measures at both the nearby middle and high schools, where
evening events were taking place.
Emergency services were called to the residence where they found Jones with a severe head wound. He was rushed to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital's emergency room, but his injury was too grave, and he was pronounced dead at 5:58 p.m. The Fayette County Coroner's Office later confirmed his identity and the cause of death.
The initial investigation revealed a chaotic scene. A woman who lived in the house reported being upstairs when she heard the gunshot. Upon going to the basement, she discovered the wounded teenager. Present in the basement with Jones had been her two sons, aged 13 and 23, and two other friends. However, by the time she got downstairs, all four had fled the scene. In their haste, they left behind cell phones, but the weapon used in the shooting was not immediately recovered by the police who were searching for the four individuals for questioning.
The day after the fatal shooting, the Lexington police made a breakthrough in the case. They announced the arrest of a juvenile suspect who was subsequently charged with murder in connection with the death of David Fletcher Jones. The authorities did not release further details about the suspect or the circumstances of the arrest. An obituary for Jones indicated a visitation was to be held the following Wednesday.
