In the quiet town of Owensboro, Kentucky, the life of 35-year-old Robert Darian Smith Jr. was tragically cut short on Thursday, January 17, 2019. A Black male, Smith was at his residence when he became a victim of a brutal act of gun violence that shook the community. The incident, a quadruple shooting, resulted in the deaths of two other individuals, 18-year-old Christopher Carie and 43-year-old Jay Michael Sowders.
The violent encounter left a scene of devastation for authorities to
uncover. Inside the home, two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene. A third, later identified as Carie, was transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The news of the triple homicide sent ripples of fear and sorrow through the city, as friends and family were left to grapple with the sudden and senseless loss of their loved ones.
In the days that followed, the Owensboro Police Department worked diligently to bring those responsible to justice. Their investigation swiftly led to the apprehension of two suspects in connection with the killings. One of the individuals taken into custody was identified as a man named Baines.
