In the winter of 2019, the community of Owensboro, Kentucky, was shaken by a violent act that claimed the lives of three individuals, including 18-year-old Christopher Dominick Carie. On the evening of January 17th, police were called to a residence on Audubon Avenue where they discovered a grim scene. Inside the home, three men had been fatally shot in what was described as an execution-style slaying.
The victims were identified as Carie, Jay Michael Sowders, 43, and Robert Smith Jr.,
35. Sowders and Smith were pronounced dead at the scene. Carie, who was found in the basement of the home, was transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A fourth victim, Carmen Vanegas, who was 35 at the time and later identified as Carie's mother, was also shot in the head but survived.
The investigation swiftly led to the apprehension of two suspects the following day. Arnett Baines and Cylar Shemwell were taken into custody in connection with the triple homicide. Both men faced three counts of murder and a charge of first-degree assault. Detectives established that the victims and the accused shooters knew each other, although a definitive motive for the killings was not immediately made public.
In the years that followed, the legal process unfolded. One of the accused, Arnett Baines, faced the possibility of the death penalty for his role in the slayings. Ultimately, he pleaded guilty to the three murder charges. In July 2024, Cylar Shemwell was sentenced to 10 years in prison for complicity in the crimes. During his sentencing, a surviving family member expressed that Shemwell had brought Baines into their home, leading to the tragic events.
