In the spring of 2020, the life of a Louisville teenager, known affectionately as 'Uno' to his friends and family, was tragically cut short. Christopher Elijah Ward, a 17-year-old Black male, was a senior at Moore High School with a passion for traveling with his family, playing video games, and spending time with his cousins. He was a well-loved young man, known for his ability to brighten any room and make people laugh.
On the evening of April 23, 2020, Christopher was with three other
individuals in a vehicle in the Hikes Lane area. The group had arranged to purchase narcotics from an individual they did not know. According to a witness in the car, the plan was to 'swipe' the drugs without paying. After the alleged theft, as they drove away, several shots were fired into their vehicle. Christopher and another person were struck by the gunfire. They were driven in a private vehicle to Norton Audubon Hospital, but by the time they arrived, Christopher had succumbed to his injuries. The second victim was transferred to University Hospital in serious condition.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a suspect. A witness from the vehicle later identified 18-year-old Kameron Faircloth from a photo pack as the shooter. A significant break in the case came when Faircloth's own mother contacted detectives, reporting that her son had confessed to being responsible for the shooting. Kameron Faircloth was taken into custody late on a Sunday afternoon and was subsequently charged with murder, assault, and wanton endangerment.
