In the early morning hours of September 5, 2020, a friendly and outgoing man named Ellis Wayne Souders, 42, lost his life in a sudden act of violence at Whiskey River Pub in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Known by the nickname “Sweet Tooth,” Souders was a regular at the establishment and was known for his peaceful nature and efforts to de-escalate tensions among patrons. That night, he was attempting to calm a situation involving another patron, Shannon Ward, even going so far as to walk with Ward to the bar to buy him a drink just moments before the fatal encounter.
The tragic event was captured on the bar's surveillance cameras, showing the moment Ward, then 45, of Elizabethtown, shot Souders once in the head. Patrons at the bar reacted swiftly, tackling and disarming Ward immediately after the shooting. The Bowling Green Police Department arrived at the scene on River Street and arrested Ward. Souders was pronounced dead at the scene. He was an employee of the General Motors Corvette Assembly Plant and a volunteer for various local civic organizations.
Shannon Ward was charged with murder and first-degree wanton endangerment. He later pleaded guilty to the charges against him. During his sentencing trial, sixteen witnesses testified, and the footage of the homicide was presented as evidence. Ward testified that he had little memory of the events at the bar. In December 2022, a judge sentenced Ward to 40 years in prison, consisting of a 35-year sentence for the murder charge and a five-year term for wanton endangerment, to be served consecutively. During the sentencing, the judge expressed sympathy for Souders' family, acknowledging that no sentence could bring back their loved one who was described as a loving and caring man trying to improve a deteriorating situation.
