In the autumn of 2020, the life of 38-year-old Daniel Eric Nantz was tragically cut short in a residence on Larkwood Drive in Lexington, Kentucky. On September 29th, an altercation escalated to violence, resulting in Nantz being fatally shot. The male victim, a painting contractor originally from Harlan County, was a father to five children.
Following the shooting, the suspect, Dana Caldwell, who was in a relationship with Nantz, fled the scene.
Her attempt to evade law enforcement was short-lived, as she was later located in Lancaster and extradited back to Lexington to face charges. The investigation into Nantz's death brought to light a tumultuous relationship, with court documents revealing that Caldwell had been a victim of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Caldwell was initially charged with murder. However, in a turn of events, she accepted a plea deal in February 2023. The charges were amended, and she pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. In March 2023, a Fayette Circuit Judge sentenced her to five years in prison for the manslaughter charge and two years for the firearm charge, with the sentences to run concurrently. Despite arguments that the shooting was an act of self-preservation in a 'kill or be killed' situation and letters of support for her entry into a domestic violence shelter and a recovery center, the judge denied probation, stating that it would diminish the gravity of the crime.
