On a tragic evening in Louisville, Kentucky, a promising young life was cut short. Twenty-two-year-old Ken Russell, a Black male, was at a party at the University Park Apartments on Arthur Ford Court on December 18, 2020. The festive atmosphere was shattered when a group of individuals, with robbery as their motive, burst into the residence.
The intruders, one of whom was later identified as Jaronn Deramus, brandished a handgun and fired a shot into the ceiling to assert their control.
They then began to demand money and valuables from the terrified partygoers. Amid the chaos and fear, Ken Russell demonstrated immense courage by refusing to comply with their demands and attempting to resist. This act of defiance was met with brutal violence, as one of the assailants shot him in the face, ending his life.
After the fatal shooting, the perpetrators callously continued to rob the remaining victims before fleeing the scene. The senseless violence left a community in shock and a family mourning the loss of a young man. The Louisville Metro Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, and their efforts were aided by several witnesses at the party who recognized one of the suspects.
Their testimonies led to the identification of Jaronn Deramus as a key figure in the home invasion and murder. A U.S. Marshals Service task force later located and arrested the 24-year-old in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Deramus was subsequently charged with murder and first-degree robbery in connection with the death of Ken Russell. While one suspect was apprehended, police indicated that other individuals were involved and that the investigation remained ongoing.
